What is an apprenticeship?

At TEC Partnership, we work closely with some of the region’s leading employers to provide high-quality apprenticeship opportunities that equip young people with the skills they need to thrive in their chosen careers.

But what exactly is an apprenticeship – and why are so many people choosing this route?

A real job with real training

An apprenticeship is a job. Apprentices earn while they learn, gain valuable hands-on experience in the workplace, and while study towards a recognised qualification.

Each apprentice is employed with a contract of employment and is entitled to work benefits, just like any other employee.

Apprenticeships can take between one and four years to complete, depending on the level and industry. There are available in over 1,500 different job roles ranging from engineering and construction to administration, hairdressing, and teaching.

What’s more, apprenticeships now go all the way up to degree level and beyond, offering fantastic long-term career prospects.

Why choose an apprenticeship?

There are many benefits to choosing an apprenticeship:

  • Earn a salary
  • Increase future earning potential
  • Learn practical, job-specific skills
  • Enjoy excellent career progression opportunities
  • Receive support from a mentor throughout training

Apprenticeships allow individuals to grow their skills at a pace that suits them, while gaining confidence, qualifications, and industry insight along the way.

What about pay?

As of April 2025, the minimum wage for apprentices is £7.55 per hour, but many employers choose to pay more.
