We’re celebrating International Women’s Day! It’s been around for over 100 years to promote women’s equality.
This year’s theme is #AccelerateAction, as according to data from the World Economic Forum, at the current rate of progress, it will take until 2158, which is roughly five generations from now, to reach full gender parity.
According to Arnold Clark, just 33% of the automotive industry are women. It’s been noted as a ‘male-dominated’ sector by the Women’s World Car of the Year organisation.
We sat down with Misha Watson, who is undertaking our Automotive Vehicles Maintenance course, for five quick-fire questions to get her insights into studying as a female in a traditionally male sector.
Why did you enrol on this course?
I grew up around cars and bikes, which inspired me to take this course and learn more about getting them working and maintaining them. I’m looking forward to seeing where the course takes me!
What aspects of the course were most impactful for you?
I like working with ‘on-road’ cars rather than fleet cars that don’t go onto the road. I recently completed making a taillight and assembly for a large trailer, including all the lights and wiring.
My tutors have also been great. They answer all our questions and come to support us when we need any help.
How have you applied the skills or knowledge gained from the course in real-world scenarios?
I worked on my stepdad’s car when it had broken down and needed repairs!
I have also given other people advice with their cars and maintenance, which feels satisfying and helps me apply my knowledge.
Automotive is known as a male-dominated industry. How do you feel about being a female in the automotive industry?
I have grown up around cars, bikes, and the industry, so I find it quite easy and comfortable. For others, I would say it might be scary at first, but you definitely get used to it and would be really happy within the industry.
What advice would you give to other young women considering this course and career?
Go for it and enjoy it! The course is for everyone, and yes, it can appear male-dominated, but go in there and give it your best because you will end up liking it.
Here at Skegness TEC, we want all our students to know that they can pursue and thrive in whichever career they choose, regardless of gender. We’re breaking down barriers and helping our students recognise the opportunities available to them.
If you’re interested in this course or studying at our new Skegness campus in September, get in touch today! Our enrolments are now open!
