An apprenticeship is an employment opportunity coupled with structured training, enabling learners to acquire knowledge, practical experience, and get paid. Apprentices are recognised as employees with contractual agreements and entitlements to holiday leave.
The duration of apprenticeships typically spans from one to four years, covering over 1,500 diverse job roles across various industries, ranging from Engineering and Administration to Hairdressing and Accountancy. Apprenticeships now extend to degree level and beyond, offering enhanced educational pathways and professional development opportunities.
There are different entry requirements depending on the sector and job but apprenticeships are available to anyone over the age of 16, living in England.
The minimum wage for apprentices is £6.40 per hour (as of April 2024), but many employers pay more than this. The average gross weekly wage for an apprentice is £200. This is dependent on the sector, region and apprenticeship level e.g. some Higher Apprenticeships can pay as much as £300 – £500 per week.
